I love yoghurt (luckily I'm not lactose intolerant like my Mum is now) - my fav of course is plain Greek - with extra bits on top that I add (it is often my breakfast in the AM). What came across my screen the other day from my T1D friend Sonja in BC is making both of us jump up and down!!!

Mice were feed genetically engineered bacteria ( created from a strain of benign E. coli bacteria ) - that triggered a protein in their stomach which in turn produced insulin. According to this link - after 80 days of this "yoghurt" (wonder if it comes in various flavours) - their blood sugar returned to normal levels. Hmmm, I'm beginning to like this even better!

The aim of researchers is to grow the bacteria in yoghurt, replacing insulin shots with a tasty snack or breakfast food (ooohhh - hope it comes in various yummy flavours).

" Within 80 days of ingesting the bacteria, the formerly diabetic mice showed normal levels of glucose in their blood. The researchers now aim to grow the bacteria in a yogurt, thus replacing insulin shots with a tasty snack or breakfast food. "

At first I was questioning the "genetically" modified bit that you will find in the article I linked above - as I'm abit of an anti GMO gal when it comes to food eating. I then thought to myself ... "wait - the insulin I take is gentically made - am I suffering that badly from it?" Who wouldn't admit that the choice between being a human dart board for another 50 years or having to eat yoghurt is a much nicer route to take!

As usual, when I post articles like this - where can I sign up to be a guinea pig? Hmm, hope it's thick and creamy like my Green yoghurt!
