Well 19556, I quit a job in Daycare after 12 years - with the Coordinator/Principal and HR fully knowing I was a diabetic and having to inject / test BG's from time to time (very rare - but it did happen on pizza / ice cream day). I was told I would have to leave the classroom in order to do this - which is easier said then done - with a room of 25 children (plus it was stipulated that you can't leave your room unattended). My union president couldn't help me - since I was only part time is what she told me sad to say. I decided after a week of mulling things over in my sponge brain - that it was better for me to quit my job. I did talk to other people that worked in other school boards - and was told that they wouldn't have treated me this way - as it was discrimination (you didn't have to tell me that!). Very sad to say the least - as I love working with children. I just hope no child within that school board I worked at that has diabetes has to go thru' what I did. We can do all these functions very discretely! Good thing is I have since moved onto better things - actually - now educating people about diabetes - no more hiding away in the classroom closet (never did this - couldn't fit in one).I just remembered I posted a blog about this last year - here's the link .... http://www.diabetes1.org/blogs/Annas_Blog/2008/10/27

So here's a new one - a very good friend of mine is a teacher with T1 (since early teens). Apparently teachers aren't supposed to eat in class. Yet, he has to - otherwise he goes hypoglycemic. One day a member of the PTA came by his class with his boss. His boss saw him eating something - & wrote him up for lack of professionalism. Isn't that crazy?! Good thing for him that he has tenure...
