Here's another reason to drink a glass of red wine daily.    There's an emerging new class of drugs called Sirtuin Modulators (SM's) that mimic the life extending effects of calorie restriction.   They are derived from red wine and few other places, like Japanese knotweed.    SM's discovery emerged out of investigation into the so-called "French Paradox" (similar to the "Mediterranean paradox").  That paradox is the question of why despite a diet of brie, creme brule, and fois gras (just about the fattiest foods known to man) the French have a relatively low incidence of heart disease.

It's not their jaunty berets.   It's the red wine.   & a few clever scientists began exploring why.   Now high potency resveratrol, the first drug from this research, is nearing the market.  Several others are in the works.    The big news for PWD is that besides the cardio-protective effects, it appears to lower both blood glucose level and insulin resistance.
Also, regular potency Resveratrol supplements are available OTC (over the counter- i.e. from the corner drug store/ natural foods market/ vitamin shop).    Consumer Lab, an independent testing authority, evaluated the major brands.   I haven't seen the report but those who have say that many of the products were lacking in reservatrol content and quality.   The highest potency products that passed their evaluation were Biotivia, Transmax and Bioforte.    The full report is available here: http://www.consumerlab.com/rev.../Resveratrol_Red_Wine/

Live longer with improved glucose metabolism.   Sounds promising!  No word though on whether we have to give up that glass of wine...
