[p]Research was done with 469 black participants who had Type 1 diabetes. Six years later they all underwent thorough testings (BG, eye exam, etc.), it was discovered that those folks that ate a high calorie / salt intake diet were more likely to have vision-threatening retinopathy (the leading cause of blindness amongst Americans from ages 20-64 with diabetes).[/p] [p]I know in the brief article I read (see the link below), they say by reducing your food / sodium intake in African-Americans with Type 1 that this may help in the progesssion of retinopathy. They are recommending this be part of the dietary recommendations for this population.[/p] [p]What makes me puzzled is why are blacks prone to this and not white folks. Is it something in the way our bodies are structured internally and how foods are processed? I mean, we North Americans eat pretty well the same type of diet, right? Questions, questions, questions.[/p] [p]Anyway, curious to see what you may think about this latest piece of news[/p]
