I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes approximately 9-10 years ago and at the time I weighed 188 lbs.  My GP told me I was obese and I was insulted by that statement.  However, he never recommended anything else, so I let it go until I went to a doctor who replaced him.  He discovered I hadn't had a blood test in 3 years and the result was 11 mmol/l  (198 mg/dl).  I was stunned to learn that I was a Type 2 diabetic when up until then, I had taken  a blood test every year.  So how could this happen?  Anyway, when my doctor told me I was a diabetic, he also stated that 3 years prior, my glucose level was 7.5 mmol/l (135 mg/dl).  He then went on to say - "they didn't worry about it unless it's 7.9 mmol/l (142 mg/dl)."

Once the shock was over, I found out that the Lakeshore Hospital on the Island of Montreal was giving 2 half day education sessions on how to handle our sickness.  I went and learned a lot about this disease and lost between 40 - 45 lbs very quickly.  I also gave up my handfuls of cookies!

I was thankful in a way, to find out when I did, so that I could now look after my health.  I always had a very strong constitution and this helps alot!
