Ugh - blood sugars are high today and now I’m wishing I got a prescription from my endo last week for testing ketones. I don’t have days like this too often with blood sugars being high like this without some sort of explanation, e.g. ate more then I should – and didn’t bolus enough for the carb count. Actually this is the first time for me since going onto the insulin pump a year ago that I’m experiencing this – and it’s not because of menstruating which sometimes does effect my BG’s – and I adjust my basal rate for that by increasing it.
No, today I am not able to get my BG’s down – they are just going up. I noticed something was up yesterday which I thought was more with the stress of going downtown for my final check up for the nip ‘n tuck done after my mastectomy a few years ago (yes – I’m back to center fold modeling again …. NOT). I am not a lover of going downtown – despite my parking my car on the outskirts and taking the metro in. I just don’t like the traffic as you get closer to the city core – period. Along with that little bit of stress, sitting over 2 hours in the waiting room to see the surgeon – I hate that as I’m sure you do as well. Why do they always have magazines that are 2-3 years old? Anyway, stress combined with sitting (though I had a good walk afterwards since it was a beautiful day here in Montreal) – does not make Anna a happy gal .
Later when I got home – which was close to dinner time –BG was going up from my last test (17!!!). I injected rather then using the pump to bring things down – and when I hit the pillow for noddy nod land my BG was at 6.8 which I was fine with – then upon awakening – it was ... 15.6!!! What the “insert your choice of bad words here” is causing this"?!? Infusion site looked fine – only changed it 2 days ago – but maybe these problems are due to using an infusion set that has a 30 degree angle plus it uses an automatic gizmo to insert it into the skin. I generally do it manually with a 45 degree angle infusion set, but since I’m running low on those I’m resorting to the Inset 30 until I can order up new supplies in a few weeks. I injected a BG correction at that point and proceeded to put in a new infusion set on another part of my body. The result now is that I’m even higher then I was this morning – as I write this it’s 16.4. I’m to the point of going to one of the diabetic forums I use and asking for help. They’re usually pretty quick at helping, but I’m stubborn and will hold out until I think of something else I may have overlooked (insulin has gone bad – Venus is moving over Mars???). My main thing right now – I want to eat – I am VERY hungry – but at a BG rate like this – it’s not considered a good thing to do. Water tastes so yummy doesn’t it? I cheat by adding one of those low cal flavour packets so I drink it.
So, this is how my day is going – inbetween catching up with housework – bopping to good tunes – I’m a high flying gal today with her BG’s. Have you had similar days to this – and how do you handle it – whether you are MDI or on the pump? Tell me – please – I feel so alone!!!
