Growing Up Again: Life, Loves, and Oh Yeah, Diabetes

June 08, 2009

Type 1 Mentor

Mary Tyler Moore is a seven-time Emmy and Tony Award recipient, type 1 diabetic and diabetes activist, as well as the International Chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Growing Up Again began as request from Senior Editor at St. Martin’s Press, Phil Revzin, whose daughter wanted to read about other people’s experiences with diabetes and the “emotional gymnastics” that go with it. Revzin immediately thought of Moore for the project, not only because of her extraordinary work for JDRF and her own personal struggles with diabetes, but also for her candid sense of humor.

Growing Up Again is a biographical account of one woman’s perseverance with forty years of diabetes. This book provides readers with both a reality check and a technical reference for living with diabetes. Moore’s sincere and witty portrait of her life as a diabetic is filled with anecdotal stories, valuable facts, and (sometimes very frank) “what not to do’s”. Moore was 72 years old at the time of the book’s release.

Moore illustrates the impact of diabetes on her body, relationships, career, and psyche. She recounts one time when stylish shoes and poor foot care landed her in the hospital – kicking and screaming – and how these complications affected her love of dancing. She openly discusses her opinions about newer tools, such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMS), which her physician husband tested with little success. Moore depicts her own battles with diabetes complications, such as her debilitating eye disease and the consequences of the treatments. Moore asserts how her “children” were the best medicine through all her struggles with diabetes.

Mary Tyler Moore’s Growing Up Again is a remarkably honest account of being a celebrity with long-term diabetes. Moore did not always make the healthiest choices when it came to accepting her diagnosis, but with good grace she admits her follies and demonstrates tenacity in surviving the challenge. Growing Up Again provides medical insight and resources for readers, along with humorous anecdotes all throughout the book. Growing Up Again is an excellent read for those who recognize Moore for her days on the Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore shows, or for those who are struggling with diabetes themselves.
