Blood Sugar Monitoring

Blood sugar monitoring can be accomplished in a few different ways. The first way blood sugar can be measured is by having a blood test in a physician's office which is then sent to the laboratory. This blood test can measure your blood glucose and your Hemoglobin A1c. Blood sugar can also be measured with a glucose meter. This is also known as the finger stick method. People with diabetes often monitor their own blood sugar levels this way.

Detailed Information:
The type of diabetes you have and your individual treatment plan will influence how many times you should test your blood sugar level.

If you have type 1 diabetes, your doctor may recommend that you test your blood sugar level at least three times a day. The best time to test yourself is before and after you eat a meal, go exercising, and fall asleep. You should make sure to check your blood sugar level more often if you have been feeling ill.

If you take medication to manage type 2 diabetes, your doctor might ask you to test your blood sugar level once a day, despite whether you use insulin or not. If you manage type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise alone, you may need to test your blood sugar level even less often.
